Clinical responsibilities are primarily provided through in-patient team consultation and on-site Sexual Abuse Management Clinic.
Scholarly work is facilitated through formal Washington University course work (topics such as research design, biostatistics and epidemiology), an ongoing curriculum shared with other pediatric fellowship programs, and mentorship by experienced colleagues.
Additional educational activities include close participation with the local CAC multi-disciplinary team, local child fatality review team meetings, and frequent activities with child abuse pediatricians across the state of Missouri.
Fellows will have ample opportunity to educate lay people, professionals involved in the multi-disciplinary response to child abuse, and medical professionals in all levels of training/experience.
Available electives include experiences with experts in pediatric radiology, pediatric gynecology, and forensic pathology.
The expansive spectrum of resources available at Washington University in St. Louis provides fellows the opportunity to pursue any individual special interest.
The Child Abuse Pediatric section includes faculty: Adrienne Atzemis, MD and Jamie Kondis, MD, and Fellow, Marissa Cantu, MDJamie Kondis, MD, presented her poster “Missed Fractures in Infants Presenting to the Emergency Department With Fussiness” during Pediatrics Research Retreat and later at the 2013 AAP Annual Conference. Members of the Child Protection Team were invited to meet with Missouri Governor Jay Nixon for the signing of Missouri Senate Bill 256. Team members worked with Missouri representatives and senators to support the passage of this and other bills directed at improving the medical response to child abuse across the state.
